Is business continuity planning really worth it for a company my size?

Smaller organizations are the most vulnerable, not the least — they're seen as soft targets and rarely have the reserves to absorb an outage. A 2022 Cybereason study found roughly a third of organizations hit by ransomware had to close temporarily or permanently, and other analyses put the share of U.S. companies that shut down after an attack even higher. The Heritage Company, a decades-old firm, laid off around 300 employees and closed just before Christmas 2019 after a ransomware attack. The cost of a plan is a rounding error next to the cost of being the next cautionary tale.

Can't we just recover from a cyberattack or disaster on our own

Accepted Answer

Often, no — and faster than you'd think. In 2014, code-hosting company Code Spaces was effectively destroyed in hours: an attacker who gained access to its cloud control panel deleted its data, and the company couldn't recover. Without a tested recovery plan, "we'll figure it out" becomes "we're out of business." A continuity plan exists precisely so you're not improvising during the worst day in your company's history.

We already have backups — isn't that enough?

Backups are a component, not a plan. The Code Spaces collapse is the cautionary tale: the attacker reached the backups too, leaving nothing to restore from. A real continuity program assumes backups can fail — it includes isolated, tested recovery copies, defined Recovery Time and Recovery Point Objectives, and rehearsed procedures. An untested backup is a hope, not a strategy.

Every hour of downtime drains revenue and trust — a continuity plan compresses recovery from days to hours.

We've been in business for decades — doesn't that prove we're resilient?

Longevity is no shield. Lincoln College had operated for 157 years — surviving two world wars, the 1918 flu, and the Great Depression — but a December 2021 ransomware attack, combined with pandemic pressures, left it unable to recover, and it closed in May 2022. In the U.K., the 158-year-old logistics firm Knights of Old shut down after a ransomware attack crippled its ability to operate. Decades of success don't survive one unmanaged disruption.

Our industry isn't a target — do we still need continuity planning?

Accepted Answer

Every industry is a target now. The companies above span healthcare (Wood Ranch), education (Lincoln College), logistics (Knights of Old), and finance — currency-exchange giant Travelex was thrown into a month of disruption by a 2020 ransomware attack and ultimately went into administration with around 1,300 jobs lost. Attackers don't check whether you think you're important. Disruption — cyber, natural, or operational — doesn't discriminate by sector.

Isn't cyber insurance enough to protect us?

Insurance pays after the damage; it doesn't keep you running, restore your data, or rebuild customer trust. Travelex reportedly had a cyber insurance policy in place, yet it still wasn't enough to cover the losses from the disruption to its operations. A payout can't un-close your doors during the weeks you can't serve customers. Insurance and a tested continuity plan are complements — not substitutes.
